Dafremen Sounded like a good idea at the time?

Around 20,000 people died today in New York City having been shot with double barreled jumbo jets.

It's not the guns people, it's not the planes, it's not the knives or the bombs or the explosives or the fertilizer. It's not the plutonium or the stealth technology or the bioweapons.

It's the lack of communication and understanding. Plain and simple. It's lack of communication between humans that need to communicate. Not through diplomatic channels, but through private, personal channels. Until we actually make an EFFORT to understand the people around us we will continue to live in fear of them and them of us.

Make no mistake though, until that day comes, both sides will need their guns, otherwise, only ONE side will make it to that day.
The last side to give up it's guns.

kingsuperspecial sadly, Dafremen, you're about to be blasted by knee jerk reactions from all those that feel the mere existance of a gun or bomb or army is the reason bad things happen. How many will get what Daf is saying? This kind of shit happens because people don't see each other as individuals, and don't take time to make judgements based on their own experience. Rather, they build a foundation of intollerance or hatred based on words and actions passed to them through family, media, government, religion, and friends. No act like this can possibly be justified, no matter what the United States stands for, or may have done, or is accused of having done. Murder is murder, plain and simple, and an eye for an eye is just plain sick. What now? More killing? Unfortunately, you can't make me believe that anything will ever stop this. Hate it too easy to nurture, and understanding requires giving something of yourself to that which you don't agree with.

I'm truly sorry for those who were killed in this event, as well as those that were killed to inspire this event, and those who will die in the future because of this event. I'm sad that this trail of murder and hate stains every culture and grows like a weed in every era of human existance. Too bad we can't all just leave each other alone, agree to disagree, or even learn to find love and growth in the things that make us different. Is it really so important to defend what your "god" is and how "it" wants us to behave that you have to end the lives and destroy the families of people who don't even know you exist?

My thoughts and human love go out to everyone left alive on this world today, regardless of your beliefs. If you breath the air of this planet you were affected by this, and life will never be the same. It's a cold day for humanity - we've once again proven that life is less important to us than the ideals we so desparately cling to as a shelter from the overwhelming fear of mortality itself.

I'm digging a hole and going to hide now.

kingsuperspecial don't tease me, I really miss that little baby_satan freak. and all the centerfolds of pam anderson haven't made that feeling go away.

the guns thing is a touchy subject.
how many of our rights to we let get take away, in the name of "protecting" society? in classic ironic form, we are really not protected at all. Instead, bad shit goes down, and then we fill out a police report AFTER the fact, or in more recent events combing the debris for the innocent dead, and hope someday the wicked are brought to "justice" . I don't see this as being protected, and the "justice" system becomes a nightmare of expensise, loopholes, and inefficancy. Does this sound like the way you want your world to be? Do you realize that it's already like this?

Imagine another scenerio: after a rigorous background check, extensive training, and a certification course, your average american citizen is allowed to carry a concealed firearm. think that will lead to more violence? really? do you really think that someone who is determined to wage violence is going be stopped by a few rules saying they shouldn't have a weapon? doubt it, but lets continue, and assume the average citizen can carry a concealed weapon. Now imagine you are a criminal, and you know that the society you live in allows people to arm themselves, and any single place you go there may be one or many individuals with a concealed weapon? and they have been trained to use that weapon? now, how do you feel about holding up a liquor store? attempting to shoot people at your office? hijacking a plane? in a society where you are not sure if someone is packing, the risk that your tyrany will be met with an equal display of force could easily deter a criminal from action. moreover, should a criminal roll those dice, it is likely someone will have a way to defend themselves, and as a concealed weapon that person would have the upper hand and could very likely eliminate the threat without harming anyone but the agressor. were we given the right to keep and bear arms for our amusement? if it was a good idea then, why is it not a good idea now? seems to me the world has gotten a lot more dangerous, yet we have become a society of cowards, hoping it won't happen to us and then we are powerless if it does. three people with a permit to carry a concealed weapon could have done a whole lot of good the other day, and saved thousands of lives. doesn't that balance out the occasional chance that one person will abuse that right? and if they ban guns altogether, do you think the bad guys will say "damn, I guess we cant get a gun anymore?" lets see, cocaine is illegal. do you see that business being hindered by that little fact?

try to think about it without your knee-jerk reflex polically liberal "guns are the problem" response. guns are not the problem - people are. I'd prefer that the head count of who actually has a gone be weighted a little more in favor of the good guys.

dB A few weeks ago I would have argued this. But now... I'm not so sure.
I think maybe it is a good idea, but I'd have to insist that people be trained that it's a defensive thing and how to use it without actually shooting anyone.

....... guns didnt really have anything to do with sept 11 becaues even the hijackers on the planes just used knives. not guns.. 010915

Aimee it's not the guns you should be worrying about... it's the psychotic asshole with his/her hand on the trigger you should be worrying about. 010915
...
kingsuperspecial That is the point exactly. Would a "psychotic asshole" be able to pass the tests and get the permit? Hopefully not. However, to reiterate my earlier point; if motivated, trained, responsible people were on that plane with a gun in their possesion, Sept. 11th could have been a different day. If the idea that it was impossible to tell who had a gun wasn't enough to stop the terrorists, the likely hood that one cautious citizen was on the plane with a trump card to play against the knives, the hand might have played out in a substantially less tragic way.

I don't discount the idea that people could pass the criteria, get guns, and then later use them for the worst. However, doesnt this situation happens already? Yes. But currently, there is rarely (if ever) another person present with a gun to counter the "psychotic asshole". Between the way the laws now stand and the fact that guns have been so effectively demonized in our society, the likelyhood of someone besides the psycho/criminal having a gun is almost zero. Change this to a situation where is is likely that another person has a gun, and I think you would deter many situations before they even came to be. Then, if the situation does occur anyway, the more likely it is that a non-psycho has a gun as well, the better.

I'm just throwing out something to think about. The bigger concept is how we are giving more and more of our ability to act in our own interest away to the "authorities", and becoming more and more dependant (or at the mercy of?) those same "authorities" for our well being. Can they be everywhere at once? Moreover, do we want them everwhere at once? All I'm sayings that, before you reflexively draw up plans to tighten down "security" in an attempt to make us all "safe", you think about what alternatives there might be, and what role YOU want to play in deciding your own fate.

I have heard that a message in the same spirit is being circulated by the NRA. I guess it's no co-incidence that I'm a NRA member; but I have not seen that message and don't know what it's aruguments are. Maybe it's an idea that holds some weight, or maybe I'm just a redneck and a "psychotic asshole".

Just don't piss me off, or I'll shoot yer ass...
