in joshua, ban means to destroy, vanquish, and exterminate an enemy. specificly the cananites who were occupying lands that the isrealites had been told (by their god) was to be possesed by them. the came as invaders from the wastelands and destroyed cities and other settlements killing their populations and destroying thier foundations, lest they be rebuilt. hence the line "and the walls came tumbling down" in the song joshua fought the battle of jerico. i think that this period is the start of the time that isreal began as a nation of sorts. it is when the returning isrealites displaced and subjigated the other indigenous people of the area for the first time. not an especially good precedent for zionism. |
