f if you just look at the way children play and imagine an adult with a pretend plastic baby in a push chair walking down the high street being completely serious....., they would probably be directed towards a psychologist.

However an adult giving a child a pretend gun for their birthday is considered to be completely "normal" !

skin walker kittens and puppies play at being predator-and-prey, young goats butt heads and it's not as if children never envisioned themselves as warriors before television came along.

deep beneath the veneer of genteel civility we have been painting over ourselves since the first deviant ape decided to walk erect there is still a primal brutality that we will never ever completely lock away

a thing can only have as much influence over you as you grant it

kung fu i see violence or aggression as a weakness, protection for ones own life or family is a different matter however, defending yourself and others without weapons and never retaliating, is a strength.

i suppose some people can't control themselves
and maybe don't understand simple things so become destructive. If you believe that tv or books or films or whatever has no influence then that suggests that environment does not play full part, maybe meaning that your kama or chemistry may be a place to put the blame!

skin walker way to miss my point, and bonus points for the condescension, "kung fu"

i am all a-tremble in the face of such enlightened discourse.

we can dress it up as nicely as we please, we can do our very best to sublimate it, but it is absolute foolishness to deny that underneath all of our efforts and all of our polish we are still animals and still possess the capacity to behave as such

and if you had the faintest glimmer of understanding or comprehension you might have caught the last sentence of my remarks, but i felt that the good tourist's remark about television was perhaps a bit of an oversimplification.

you, on the other hand, wade in with some ridiculous sense of your own piety which i will forgive as the likely ignorance and arrogance of youth, which breeds a sort of shortsighted fervor otherwise only ever seen in "recovering" addicts and "born-again" zealots

environment does play a part, but there are many factors to one's "environment" each simultaneously separate and intertwined...and if you think that instinct and other facets of biology play no part in the shape of who and what we are as individuals and as a whole species than your saffron robe may be wrapped a little too tightly and the lofty peak from whence you dispense your wisdom may be too high for you to be getting the oxygen you need so do not preach to me of karma or chemistry.

minnesota_chris we do paint ourselves over with a patina of civility, and with enough repaintings, it becomes our true surface 080423

skin walker has worn painters whites before over-painted surfaces eventually crack without a vigorous abrading and repainting (my metaphor for those major transitions and upheavals to which we are all prone)

to paraphrase someone else's words here:

normalcy is a construct, it has good purpose, but is still rooted in artifice
080423

minnesota_chris I disagree with this, though. We are, at least in part, who we make ourselves out to be.

I think that our self-delusions comprise quite a lot of ourselves, in fact.

kung fu to: "skin walker"

thanks for your complex and concise answer, i've pulled the bullet out and I'm still alive you will be disappointed to know.

I don't mind a discussion or an argument for that matter but be very careful when it comes to criticizing others, it is one thing having an opinion but another summing someone up in the way that you have.

Maybe i don't exactly understand you because your complex mind does not come to simple answers. As you said, a person can take things how they want to and that is exactly what you have done.

My point about Karma and chemistry/genetics was more angled to the point that possibly they are not changeable especially if you have a closed mind.

Lets not waist time with "i was born with it", its a lame excuse.
080423
...
skin walker it is not an excuse unto itself but a small element of one.

what are people besides little chimeras of animal body and spiritual being doing, as "Grendel" called it, "our little dances for whatever peanuts and change come our way" struggling between instinct and the occasionally burdensome sense of self-awareness

though to prove the nucleus of my point, we both engaged in what amounted to intellectualized aggression against each other

didactic violence, if you will.

i apologize if i was excessively mean spirited in my tone, but not for the scolding i intended it to be
