after listening to many dharma talks from itunes, I believe now that these are certainly a treatment for depression, although methinks not a cure for it. how do you cure getting too old and cranky? how do i learn to consistently do my homework and clean my room?

the zen cure for getting old and cranky: child mind, beginner's mind the zen thing about a clean room: a uncluttered room encourages an uncluttered mind. now finding the discipline to clean on a regular basis isn't something i've been able to find either. is about to do some serious spring cleaning (soon)

Its funny but I think your on to something there. I was just thinking aobut what you wrote and i've noticed I'm happier and less cranky when my house in in order, and the longer i wait to do simple house cleaning/laundry, the more unmotivated I get. Should spring into some cleaning himself.

eating walking cooking cleaning mindfulness zen monastics managed to permeate every second of their day with mindfulness. i live in such a small place that clutter gets oppressive. i used to be such a messy child. organized chaos, piles everywhere. i am becoming more like my mother in my older age. she is always cutting the crap from her house. maybe even a little obsessively. i think i have way more shit than i actually need. i need to rid myself of some of it.

what i'm not sure on is whether beginner's mind is truly equated to child's mind. my Moon in Capricorn says no way am i reverting back to a child. (even though i do revert or regress under stress caused by mental imbalances) at any rate i'm reading Suzuki so I should have a clearer picture of what the whole cranky/innocent mindset really will look for me. having the room clean definitely helps me, and I am better at it than i used to be. i do have too much stuff, with plans to go with it, that i haven't really given up on yet. the cleaner my area the more light i feel, i just wish i would remember all my projects when they are sitting all neat and put away.

maybe child and beginner's mind are not always the same, but remember how you tried to solve problems, tried something new for the first time when you were a kid? since i work with kids i have always took the delighted side of this whole thing. kids can have pure joy, delight, amazement in accomplishing something. it's one of those 'go back to the present moment' things. if it's a nice day when i'm standing at the busstop i try to focus on that rather than how i might be late to work if the stupid bus just doesn't come already. cynical kids are hard to find, at least at a young enough age.

well, i don't remember much from my childhood. here it says, "The point we emphasize is strong confidence in our original nature." (Suzuki, Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind.) I know there's a koan about remembering your face before you were born. I've always been into that one, but also interested in the event of birth itself and the changes that take place. it could be i'm a bit lost, constantly wondering, where am i? developmentally that is. in which case i believe Zen says, i am where i am. it is what it is. useful, that. if i'm ever dying of cancer, i'll be sure to rely on it.

i went to the shambala center in my area this morning and after meditation, the reading was about the seven riches, the first of which being a significant other to share your life with. i don't really remember the others cause i was caught up with the heart_pang that one caused. the others were the counselor, the general, the steed...the other three allude me. but i like saturday morning group there. i should go more often.
