poet why do people accept advertisements as a fact of life

some person called Shasta Orange Soda from some other message board said:
"The greatest advertising coup was hiring shrinks to help advertisers perfect psychological manipulation of viewers to the point where people treat advertising like some kind of art form and even go so far as to spread ads around for free. The proper emotional reaction to every non-parody ad... should be the same feeling you get when a stranger walks up to you and starts spinning a wild tale about needing money for bus fare to New Jersey."

i agree with that sentiment! WHY is it that it seems like NO ONE has a problem with this? we get conditioned all our lives to swallow this bullshit! its ridiculous!

I for one HATE advertisements and i resent them, its fucking manipulative propaganda... why do people tolerate this? advertisements are full of bullshit rhetoric and logical fallacies.. ALL OF THEM! people are so quick to just dismiss ads as harmless and take them at face value... but theres ALWAYS subtext. people should be able to see the GLARING logical fallacies contained in almost EVERY modern ad, and understand that they are SHAPING YOUR MIND even if you don't want them to. Your mind receives subconscious messages which influence your thought processes and behaviors... and none of this is accidental. unless your ad is purely describing your product without LYING or TRICKING people, you are no better than any other propaganda peddling asshole throughout history!

poet well sure but its EVERYWHERE! i mean... at least with politics there are accusations of people lying flying around... the IDEA of someone being wrong or manipulative is there on some level, even if it only exists in the public eye for the purpose of smearing opponents. (dont get me started about politics because thats a whole nother inherently fucked up situation)

but with ads its just like its an accepted fact of life, like the sun rises and sets, you work for your money until (or else) you die, and we watch our daily advertisements... the indifference most people show towards this is showing of how conditioned we are, most people are completely apathetic towards this, because the media has the voice of authority! and that guy at the 7-11 trying to scam 'gas money' is gross looking and sketchy and dangerous but naaahh those corporations are much more upstanding citizens so yes i will trust my brain to them... just cause they put themselves in a position of authority, like theyre to be trusted - its just the same sketchy con artist dressed up in a nice suit working with a team of psychologists and researchers trying as hard as they can to FUCK YOUR MIND... ads dont just fall out of the fucking sky, the level of organization behind this is huge, its like theyre staging a heist on your BRAIN and its so well planned you dont even know it!

the fact that no one finds it odd to be subjected to propaganda ALMOST CONSTANTLY is MIND BOGGLING.

so i guess my point strideo, is that people should be able to perceive these things! people should understand propaganda techniques and rhetoric and logical fallacies so they can discount bullshit lies and learn to think for themselves!

like ask yourself next time you see an advertisement... what the fuck does this have to do with the product? how are they appealing to my subconscious? WHY AM I WATCHING THIS???

ergo It is not acceptable, I hate it and try to avoid advertising as much as possible.
It's one of the reasons I like blather.
Ads are an assault on our psyches and should be treated as such. But, as you say, most people are unaware of their
pernicious effect. It is why consumer culture is dominate. It is sad.

epitome_of_incomprehensibility You don't need to look deep for hidden meanings to realize how ads are manipulative... a lot of it is about familiarity. People are generally more likely to buy products that are more familiar to them, so if you bombard people with a product or logo as much as you can (McDonalds, Koodo cell phone plans, etc.) you're likely to get results. And it's an annoyingly annoying annoyance sometimes. 100909

poet oohhh i know

it annoys me to no end that as much as i try not to have it happen, ads will affect me subconsciously
like i know if im gonna buy orthopedic insoles on a whim, ill probably buy dr scholls cause its all ive heard of

i find it all disguisting

this is more directed at the people who find that this sort of manipulation to be somehow acceptable... as you say it is more obvious, but for some reason the masses have already decided this is totally OK, and i dont think that most of them realize the depth to which most of these ads go to, in ADDITION to the simple spam product placement to encourage product recognition strategy

its not simple at all

dafremen I've been using sharpies and black duct tape to cover or add what I wanted to logo tees.

So "Coca Cola" becomes "Coca Cola Rots your teeth."

The Nike Swoop becomes a smile on a face and says, "Ju do it. We'll watch."

"Wuhan Chicken Gourmet Chinese Food" now has a coughing rooster logo instead of just a rooster and says "Covid Free"

"Helmet Laws Suck" became "Laws Suck."

We are walking billboards and pay a premium for the imposition. No wonder elitists think we're stupid af.
