Kate, I agree. However, in order to understand things, you need to look at the lowest common denominator; if I was studying an alien species, the first thing I'd look for would be similarities to other species, likewise, when studying other humans, it's important to be able to see the world through their eyes, as previously stated on blatherskite_inside_story, one can, of course, obtain this information through deep comtemplation of blathes, however, as stated in sarcastic_delimiters, it is sometimes hard to accurately portray emotion and most of all tone, therefore by reading raw thoughts (as blather is close to), it is hard, in some cases, to understand the individual's viewpoint; by looking at simple things like music taste, upbringing, social groups, favorite X, star sign, even, one can ascertain the perspective that that blatherskite is coming from. So while they are generally mindless and purely for 'fun', they can serve a useful purpose.
