The entire thing is to avoid revolution.
They've been planning on killing us off, but not until AI could replace the drivers and other menial and mid-level labor. The engineers, doctors and academics are well in hand, being handsomely rewarded and universally admired in order to keep them working toward their own demise. Eventually AI will replace them too and they'll be disposed of.
The ultimate conclusion of this level of inequity is invariably revolt. Heads usually roll, but this game has been going on ever since the first double-dealing, greedy, power hungry POS had the torch-and-pitchfork wielding villagers come to take the cattle back that he'd swindled from them. So they've slowly tried new methods of maintaining control. It's easier for the laziest man in the village to hide his swindled goods if he converts them to gold. So getting everyone hooked on the convenience of gold, made perfect sense and was a first step toward first slowing, then stopping, then finally steering the wheels of social justice.
Once that gold was ones and zeroes on their servers,(in their pockets), and our homes and food and clothing were all theirs to control, we were as good as done. Now they're coming for the guns. and trying to bankrupt every small business owner or disrupt their supply chain until working folk have nothing and must submit to whatever we are subjected to.
Let's hope this is all paranoid delusions.
