i want some help from you skites out there
my boyfriend will graduate with a bfa in photography in 2009
he's very good at what he does
his parents refused to pay for any of his schooling
he will have approximately 50,000 dollars in debt upon graduation: that's after attending community college for a year, living in the cheapest apartment he could find, and living so frugally he doesnt buy anything
he's no longer covered on their insurance and has not been to the dentist in 3 years or so
any tips/help would be greatly appreciated
i just want to help him

Does he have a job? 2009 is still some time away, so I'd suggest getting some office job and taking night classes...

This isn't by any means an unusual situation. When I finish, I'll have $45,000 owing. The thing is, although the debt is huge, so is the timespan for paying it off. For example, our governmental student loans must be paid back pretty much as soon as you graduate, but you can break it into little payments over 15 years, or even apply for more time. Find out what the rates are for payback, and all the options...the situation isn't as dire as you think, and your boyfriend will be one of hundreds of thousands with such debt. We find jobs, we work our tails off, and we get by just fine.

i'm nearly doubly indebted. student loans are, in all likelihood, the cheapest borrowed money you'll ever get. it's just the uncertainty of landing that first job that makes them so daunting.
he should start seriously considering where he wants to go with his career now, so the transition is smooth once he's done with school and the loans come due. that's my advice.
