thorn i have this project i'm supposed to be doing with a few other people for school. we have to make this business, and my group is creating a skateboard company.

the problem is that my friend and i are supposed to come up with the designs, because we are the "artists," but we can't come up with anything. this is harder than you would think.

any advice/ideas would be appreciated.

z great design is often marked by what you leave off or the assumptions you discard from the history of traditional thought on the subject. i have crudely designed skateboards in the past for my own use. they were purpose built for downhill racing (juicing as we used to call it) and the best of them were the most minimal. remember the old bauhaus conciet: form follows function. think of materials first. think of utility. think of what is no longer needed for skateboards; the vestigial elements that no one has challenged. look at case studies of great design evolutions of the recent past.

check out the history of the steinberger L2 bass. it won industrial design awards and changed instrument design forever. most of the innovation was in materials then the removal of unnecessary elements that new materials allowed and finally a radical redesign of the tuning mechanism which resulted in a patent. on top of this ned (steinberger) added active pickups which were just becoming available. all of this combined resulted in an unbelievably different looking, sounding and playing instrument.

remove until there is almost nothing left and then add back only what you need.

good luck.

z what object can be reborn as a skateboard? what do you want it to do that no other has done quite so well? where will it be used. by whom? what will it be used for? when will it be used? why are current models not good enough? what will it sound like? why? how will it be stored. carried? can it be disassembled. modified for different behavior or conditions? is it needed or will it create new needs? who will want it? why? who will understand it? how? why is it necessary to evolve the species? how long will it last given normal use? where will it be available?

if you answer these questions you may find that it will take shape in the answers.

thorn we ended up doing something kind of similar to the way they are now, but with a different material, and i think it was designed to be more solid and give better balance. sorry this is really vague, my brain is falling apart today and the project was like 2 months ago. it turned out pretty well though. 050504
