girl_jane Sitting in the dark because of the
Lack of electricity
Fighting sleepiness and the dog
Who can’t get comfortable

I lit candles-
4 little
1 tall
One scented

Lying on my bed
Not wanting to sleep
But having nothing to do

I notice the shadow of myself
Cast on the wall

3 crosses
All of them are covered by the
Shadow of my hand

What would your shadow look like on my wall?

The dog moving again
Interrupting
My thoughts

Again settled-
Momentarily

I turn my attention to the
Pennies
On my night stand

One 1985
One 1980

Accompanied by so many other items
My thick framed glasses
My alarm clock
A Grumpy Bear Care Bear cup
A music box

Matches and candles
And buttons and rocks
Various notebooks
Unimportant papers

Play with fire
Burning the unimportant papers
I entertain myself briefly

What would your face look like in candlelight?

The wind rattles my windows
And wakes the sleeping dog
A few circles and he
Sleeps again

The music box
The power is out-
So I have
No stereo

But I have the
Music box

Until now I’ve had
Only the wind and the
Ticking of the
Alarm clock

It has a keyhole in the front
But it’s unlocked
The secrets kept inside are not
In danger of discovery

I pick it up and wind the
Switch on the bottom
The clicking and clanking of the
Twisting knob

Set the box back down and lift
The lid and
I dance in the dark

What would your body look like dancing in my shadows?

Would you be graceful?
Would you trip from the lack of light?
Would you last?
Would you lose your energy?

Would you keep your movement constant?
Would you stop and wait for me?

What would you do if the sun suddenly
Shone,
If my shadows disappeared?

Would you continue to dance?
Would you want my shadow back?
Would you enjoy your newfound freedom?
Would you want the shackles back?
Would your feet dance lighter without them?
Would your heart weigh you down?

What would you do if my shadow became the sun?

reitoei the crack of thunder and the lights are gone
the bulbs slowly dim to an oblivion
as they fade so does your existence
you never realized how much life depends on a half inch of tungsten
on a few strange suabatomic particles crawling along copper wire
you sit there in the dark wondering what to do
you light up the candles
eat a solemn candlelit supper
waiting for the power
waiting for the light
waiting for the hums and buzzes
waiting for distraction
distracted by nothing
waiting

Andromeda The crack of thunder
The flash of lightning that illuminates the entire sky
Rain coming down in horizontal torrents
Trees bending and breaking in the merciless wind
A little girl sits with wide eyes
Waiting for her daddy to arrive safely
Then silence and stillness
Then the sirens come
Rocking, back and forth
Trembling by the window, blinded by tears of fright
Blinking them away in a state of confusion
Wondering where he is
Why he isn't here?
To the cellar now, everyone!
Storm's almost here!
But he isn't yet
He's still out there
No! Don't drag me away!
I don't want to go!
He's not here yet!
Mommy! Daddy's not here yet!
Daaaaadddddyyyyyyyy!!!!!!
No no no no Daaaaddddyyyy!!
Screaming as she is pulled into the cellar along with her other siblings
Little Jessie is sitting in Mommy's lap, wailing almost as loud as the wind itself
Mommy has tears streaming down her face, but she has to be strong
Her children need her to be their wall of protection
Their wall of stone
But Daddy didn't come home that day
Daddy got lost in the storm
And Daddy never came home.
