ever dumbening noc,

it's a little over ten years ago now that i ended my three year stay in new orleans. i still think often of the city. i just found an article about commander's (where i worked for a year and a half) re-opening. now and again i'll hear an interview with the likes of andrei codrescu, or harry shearer, or a discussion of what's going on there. but ultimately i feel very disconnected.

what has the past year-plus been like for you? for friends and acquaintances? are things better or worse than you expected up to this point? are you hopeful about what lies ahead?

tell about the nuts and bolts, but also about your impressions, your feelings. what's the overall mood around town? are people going about their business, or is there an overwhelming sense of defeat?

tell us. tell the world.

nocturnal I'll have to answer you in installments, as the whole tale could take quite a bit of time, and I'm in the middle of studying for finals. first, as always, me.
compared to a lot of other people, my family and I are doing great. compared to how we were this time 2 years ago, we're not so good. it's just because a few pieces of property that made up a larger part of our collective income than I realized were damaged or otherwise put out of commission. we just got the upper half of our 4-plex apartment building back and ready to rent again, so that'll help, but not as much as we'd like it. also because of that, our house hasn't had any repairs and that means that bit by bit it's getting worse. we had a fairly large chunk of our ceiling fall down when the storm hit, and about a month ago an even bigger chunk came down, but we still can't afford to fix it. again, compared to not having a home at all, that's nothing, and I definitely realize that. and, as always, money troubles bring marital troubles, so my parents aren't getting along so well because of all the stuff that's not getting done, blah blah. we can live without the luxuries we're used to, though, but it is getting a little ridiculous concerning how long it's taking. I definitely thought we'd have gotten repairs to our house by now, but I guess that's because I didn't realize how much we relied on income from the properties I mentioned so, without those, we're stuck. I hate complaining, though, because not being able to use 2 rooms in our house is a hell of a lot better than losing an entire house, or family members, so I try to remember that and quit my damn whining about not having any money to fix the cd player in my car. I mean, I have a car - shut the hell up already.
