Perhaps it was the purloi(sp?) or manner of speach used to convey the challenge. Being someone who feels that their use of the vocal style obviously brands them as someone who didn't grow up with it, thus having no right to use it, has then taken offense at the mockery.

Which I think is silly, by the way. Mark Twain did it all the time, as well as countless other writers. One should not be offended at HOW a person says something, but WHAT they are saying.

too much of pop culture is borrowed from afro-american sources. we (the culture) have always first derided then adopted their slang, social mores and topical tropes. it is not so long since ebonics was held up as worthy of nothing but ridicule, even on these blue pages. the pimp thing is nothing but a new spin on blackface. it's funny because it belittles. then again, all humor is at somebody's expense. perhaps i am too serious. sorry about my intrusion. blathe on.

yeah. that's probably good advice. a while back i had a similar (if more heated) exchange with sabbie on last_night_i_heard_you_crack. in spite of my respect and awe for sab's work here, i stand by my sentiments on that one.

okay...my guilt is gettting the better of me. z: I'm sorry if I offended you. This particular blathe was done when I was deep in my cups. I just sorta fell into the talk. I wanted only to ressurect the Neochallenger, because I had participated and was looking forward to the next challenge.

I consider putting on ebonics as offensive as putting on a "clueless teenage girl" voice or a "redneck trailer park trash" voice or any voice, it's just adopting a stereotype. Things need to be seen within their context. I don't think doar was furthering a whitely-privileged racist agenda. I think doar, knowingly or not, chose those particular words because they (at face value) imply threat and domination, but because ebonics are used to indicate a joke, the opposite of threat and domination is conveyed - an actual intent to express that he isn't trying to aggressively horn in on someone else's territory. I don't think ebonics are necessarily funny because of racism all the time, I think in some situations ebonics are funny because it's funny when someone puts on the opposite of what they are, and ebonics are one of the few dialects that can come across in written English in a readable and recognizable way. just my thoughts.

and another thing - I don't think any culture should be exempt from a little teasing, just as no culture should be exempt from a little criticism, as long as its done with an open mind to reciprocal teasing and a recognition of one's own absurdities. we liberals are terrified of inadvertently oppressing someone. and all humans should be. but black people aren't these poor helpless souls who'll fall down if someone talks in ebonics. there are plenty of racist issues, but I don't think this is directly one of them.

ignore the man behind the curtain. i am usually more guarded about sharing my pet peeves. i also dislike abbreviation, identifying phrases like" he's a -------" and many uses of the words "they" and "them". dot is absolutely right in pegging me as a liberal who is squeamish about inadvertent abuse. it was simply a matter of my inner editor calling in sick. ignore the man behind the curtain.
