a music fan slightly weeping
|
i didn't mourn his loss at the time, but it is very sad. he didn't abuse drugs just for the pleasure of it. he was trying to ease the excruiating pain of a chronic stomach problem. and one thing led to another. he made some good music. not worthy of the worship he received, but something that sticks in your head, and sometimes makes your body rock. with his death, came the decline of grunge music. even if he didn't make a lasting change in music history, he did leave a void in the pop world. i know that his fans worldwide will remember this day, even if some us don't understand the hype. i wish he felt he had more to live for. he could have had a beautiful life.

of all the things i've read about him that were either trashing him or overpraising him, you, slightly weeping fan, have said it best.

i think that its stupid for all the people who treat him like a god to do so because of this, and there ARE people who just adore him because he committed suicide, not for his music or anything.

his death cemented his place as a pop icon; now pay attention, an icon is a small image that is representative of a larger one. grunge emerged as a way of bringing rough edges back into mainstream music, and nirvana had right time/right place/right sound for that particular point. since kobain died before popularity could destroy much of what he represented (and possibly destroy his talent, like many other artists who became rich and famous and suddenly didn't have anything eating their souls and driving them to create, not naming names), his suicide was a way for many of a similar depressive mindset to say, "he *really* felt my pain," and so in the same way that Jesus died for other people's sins, kurt died for other people's depression. (okay, so not entirely the same, but whateva.)

I think his suicide decreased his popularity. He is what he is because of their music.

while my friends all pretended to understand, and played their hand at mourning, because someone so cool had given them an excuse to cut the shit towards each other.

except if he didn't die and nirvanas next cd was a mediocre piece of shit that was just completely poppy and happy and stupid, they would fade away, and then be on vh1's where are they now? the suicide was a huge deal.

Nirvana could never possibly be on Where Are They Now, even if Cobain hadn't died. insolent fools! they were the start of a huge revolution-trend. mainstream sheep or not, people don't forget something as big as nirvana. death or no death.

what is different now that nirvana is gone? We had pearl jam and alice in chains, soundgarden and temple of the dog and the music that they have formed after that... but it seems to me all the bands that have either been inspired by nirvana directly, or are just ripping off their image or sound... aren't even good enough to be recognized as any kind of revolution. It seems to me the revolution they started was people wearing t-shirts with kurt cobains face on them. nirvana was very much influenced by punk music... but what message of their own did they have that punk wasn't already giving? what was their revolution besides 'Love Nirvana?' it seems like the effect they had on people either burns out or goes away, as they get older.

in the liner notes of i think incesticide kurt says something to the effect of, "if you hate homosexuals, people of another color or religion, dont even come to our shows or buy our cds" however i know plenty of people who have the small-town xenophobia or homophobia or racism that wear the kurt shirts and... do the whole grunge thing, still to this day. so, whatever message they might have had was slightly miscommunicated. their message might have been... fuck the man. But you know those people looking for a "fuck the man" message could easily find it anywhere, and nirvana certainly weren't the first ones to introduce the idea of fucking the man to the mainstream.
