Geese say:
|
Foie_gras is usually produced by inserting a tube into the throat of the goose or duck and then continually feeding it, so as to fatten the liver. The bird is trapped and experiences continual pain. If this were done to a human we'd deem it horrific. Would you treat your cat/dog this way? Chicago has recently banned this dish in restaurants. "Thanks, Chicago!"

so eating animals is ok so long as they don't suffer, eh? right. Just how much suffering is OK? I mean, any meat that arrives on your dinner table has been killed, so there's always some degree of suffering; how do you choose what level of pain is acceptable? If you're going to start condemning certain types of meat because the method of execution is unacceptable, then imho you should condemn all meat dishes. If you're vegetarian then fine, kudos. Otherwise, look up some info on how your favourite meat dishes are made. May I suggest tinyurl.com/hkh5n as a starter? Not directed at anyone in particular. I'm a meat eater, playing devil's advocate. I would be vegetarian if meat didn't taste so good.

Every so often, my grandfather would raise chickens. whatever revulsion my young mind experienced while watching him kill them and watching their headless bodies flailing around the yard never put me off of enjoying them once they were cooked and on my plate but then again there are people i would eat just for the pleasure of being able to shit them out for spite later were it not for the whole hassle of their being laws against that sort of thing

Ducks say:
|
It isn't about the killing. Things die, that's not the complaint. Rather, it is about the lifestyle. Geese are kept alive for many months, often with a feeding tube constantly inserted. Not only are they force fed beyond all hunger (YOU try eating another full meal after your tenth helping on Thanksgiving; now, repeat for a year, all day every day) but they are also consequently unable to move. Ducks and geese are birds. If it was simply a matter of a duck, after a normal life, being killed for food, foie_gras wouldn't appall any more than other meat sources. "Please let me eat like a bird! Please let me fly like one, too!"

who are you to decide that killing is fine but constant suffering is bad? what if the bird was only in pain half the time, would that be OK then? surely if pain is bad, then any pain is bad. if any pain is bad then killing is bad (assuming there's no such thing as a painless death, or that animals are not killed painlessly). if killing is bad then we shouldn't eat meat at all. alternatively, if pain is not bad, we can eat all the meat we like, even if the animal concerned was in constant pain.

perhaps my agreement with u24's enjoyment of carnivorous fare was a bit of a divergence. Besides, not being a fan of liver in general i always found foie_gras a bit much for my tastes, though i did once find a vegan substitute made from nuts and i-forget-which vegetable that was not only palatable but quite tasty...which shocked the bejeesus out of me at the time.

i think torture might be worse than death. tortured people sometimes beg for death. though the dying sometimes beg for life, too, and life's a sort of torture. you can kill with respect. but torture is not respectful. yes, it is better to kill with respect than without it. why? because a life is ending, and that's a serious event. but death is a necessary part of life's continuum. death is inseperable from nature. torture, however, is comparatively rare ... and avoidable.
