it was the only thing i really had of interest in my room to read when i got home so i started reading it again. joan vinge is one of my favorite sci-fi writers. there is this character in the book that tries to kill himself when he is captured by these people but this girl comes along and saves him so he endeds up with big scars on his wrists. in the society that he was from, suicide was considered honorable because 'if there is no honor in life let there be honor in death' and people hated him more for failing than they did for trying. he ended up being the hero of the universe and had his scars removed but he always felt like they were there. some of mine have faded_away but they still feel like they are there. randi looked at me like i was crazy when she noticed them. but bethann understood. whatever happened to 'you can't blame a girl for trying'?

MTK "I failed to kill myself. I tried, but it didn't work. Someone please help and kill me." Whatever...I had a friend who swore he was going to kill himself. He was just yanking all of our chains--didn't really have the balls to pull it off. You'd better not be one of those. You know, there's already way too many people here. If you're going to do it, then do it. Don't say anything, don't do anything, and go do it somewhere where nobody can see. And if, in that split second moment right before you die, you have any second thoughts--remember this and remember what I'm about to write: you have the power. 041020

p2 i recall reading about a french revolutionary
robespierre?
i dunno
anyway
he was one of the leading revolutionists
until he started criticizing
some other powerful revolution leaders
they turned on him
and sentenced him to death
while awaiting his death
he tried to kill himself with a gun
and failed
he spent the last hours of his life
before his execution
with his jaw hanging off his face
from his poorly aimed shot
