In the Sufi tradition, the snail is a symbol of time, and of conditioning. T he snail's shell increases in layers and thickness as time goes on, so too, grows our conditioning. The past becomes our prison, sweeping away the limitless possibility of the future in a cascade of doubts, fears and expectations. Everything must be planned, just so. We must know what to expect, or be paralyzed with fear by waht might happen when we don't. In reality, there is only now, and upon releasing the fears and conditioning of the past, now is and will always be, the most glorious moment of our lives. |
