i don't think so. i think they fall into the deep sleep of forgetting until the sun gets warm enough to coax them back to life. the identity of a tree always seemed to be in the leaves to me. maybe they think of their leaves like clothes though. the house i lived in had a big porch that i stood on often smoking cigarettes. the trees were old and tall with thick trunks and branches, at the right time of year many leaves. in the leaf time, the wind rustled through them and shuffled the loose ones along like music. in the winter, the bare branches clacked together like bones. |
