"two shots of jack please. thanks. there ya go buddy" he said, giving his friend the slightly less generous of the two pours. "everytime you get two shots, you always give me the smaller one, without even asking me which i'd like" his friend said with a laugh. "well which shot would you take?" "the smaller one of course, it's the right thing to do." "well you got the smaller shot so why are you complaining." they walked over and sat down and talked about their days. "how's your practice going" his friend asked casually. "it's going." "family law and criminal defense right? how do those work together." "well a lot of my criminal clients could have benefitted from some family law long before they became my clients on the criminal side." "i had an interesting case the other day though. a man was married to a male to female transsexual. she was from mexico. the man died and the family challenged the marriage license so as to get the death loot and whatnot." "so how did it go?" "well we made the arguments but lost the case, but then something interesting happened. the woman, eliza, had her family there to support her. her mother and sisters had always been supportive but her father was a conservative catholic and throughout the years had said some harsh things to eliza who he insisted on calling alex, her male name. after the case he had seen how destroyed she was by it all. i had never seen him talk much before this, he mainly sat and looked grumpy. but he went up to her and said 'you knew it wasn't going to be easy mija.' well upon hearing mija, eliza broke into tears. they didn't hug or anything, but later when i apologized to her for how the case turned out, she told me that it had all been worth it. and i thought that things like this were not something that could be legislated, but were still something that the law could accomplish none the less." "cheers."
