it's much better than christianity. seems to have a better sense of community without as many divisions. if I wasn't atheist, I'd totally convert. and then change back every yom kippur for the day.

Just to warn you, nocturnal, if you aren't a Jew by blood, there's a private stigma among Jews against converts. We aren't like Christianity in that we like it when people convert (or try to get them to) unless you are already 'in the system' in which case there's some pressure to be more observant. There's a subtle air of "You never suffered with us, you never were hated for being a Jew, you did not lose members of your family to the Holocaust, you have not struggled with us or prayed with us, why do you join us now?" Because Jews are both currently and historically considered a race, converting to Judaism is like painting your skin black and proclaiming yourself an African-American on the grounds that their culture is so beautiful. It's flattering, and in an ideal world it wouldn't be a problem, but in reality you would meet a lot of Jews who simply cannot understand you. A rabbi could tell you a lot of beautiful things about converting and Jewish acceptance, but when it comes to converts there is a secret little divide between religion and culture. Less pronounced among reforms, who are pretty laissez-faire. In my experience, Judaism is about community, sisterhood among the women and brotherhood among the men, delicious food, celebration and gratitude, atonement and prayer, guilt, and love. Sort of like relaxed, and also hungry, Catholics.

I know all about that. the great majority of my friends from college are jewish. I hung out at Hillell from time to time, went to more than my fair share of jewish functions. plus, I have a teeeeny claim to being a "real" jew, but according to...what do you call it, jewish genetics?...I wouldn't be anyway. My mom's maiden name is Liebman, but her mother was catholic, and her dad's mother was too. since you're only really jewish if your mother is, too bad for me. but, like I said, I wouldn't be jewish even if I was genetically, because I don't buy the god thing, although it's clearly a better story than the whole jesus thing. I mean come on, who are they kidding with that?

hey there are a few far fetched things in judaeism too you know! All these conditions surrounding the coming of the messiah, I can't say it's looking too likely to me, but I'm not the best person to ask about it, I only have a Jewish nose by a freak occurrence of nature.

when discussing religion, generalizations and stereotypes are so much easier than the more complicated specific truths. real time savers if you ask me.
