Jenna When I was 15, I started writing a novel.

About 5 chapters in, I got disillusioned and stopped.

I started another earlier this year.

About 4 chapters in, I stopped.

I'm about to embark on a third.

Wish me luck. :)

DannyH You just have to keep going. The disillusionment is all part of the process. 011218

literary birdmad sounds like me, when i was 16 i started writing one. after about 18 months and 9 chapters (about 150pp or so, hand_written) i gave up and locked it in a box

ten years later, after several months of drifting around town, nearly homeless, i moved into the little house my grandparents left me where my family had been storing all my stuff and came upon the manuscript. i dusted it off and started rewriting it, cleaning up the narrative flow and doing a better job of making sure that the recognizable names and places are a little more altered to make sure that i don't get sued or killed if i finish it and manage to get it published

i'm up to 15 chapters, 144 pages typed

plus i'm about four chapters each into the two proposed follow ups

the interesting and problematic conceit i am using is that all three of the novels are about the same character at different stages of his life, the first novel is told in first person narrative (i am doing this, i am with these people this is what i am doing with them), the second is in the slightly more difficult 2nd person narrative (reader embodies main character, narrator addresses main character as "you") and the third and final in the more common 3rd person omnitient narrative (he said, she said they said, he was thinking this and was doing this)

if i wasn't alreadyu insane i would have driven myself there with this little project

oren The best of luck, Jenna! I'm a writer too, and tackling the novel is such a great accomplishment. I write short stories and poems, but I have a couple of novels that I work on from time to time.

Keep going, and join a writing club for feedback. Write to me if you would like to check out my online club.

cube i can't imagine writing a novel. though i've been an avid reader all my life, i just don't think i have enough to offer to fill a volume.

that's the key verb here - to fill. i see a novel as the thread of an idea with lots of filling. filling is not something i could write and expect a reader to spend precious time sifting through.

it seems hypocritical somehow

stork daddy did i tell you about the time my computer erased all of my work for the last three years. i had at least two workable novels on there. it was saddening. ah well...as the buddhists say...i can burn the verses on paper, but how can i burn the verses in my gut? 050208
