This is an intriguing and still rather puzzling issue. Generally speaking, the topic falls under the rubric of "thought process disorder." (The term "formal thought disorder" is also used by some clinicians.) Associated terms in the schizophrenia literature include "tangentiality," "derailment," "neologisms," "loose associations" and "blocking." Sometimes, in extreme cases of thought process disorder, the patient's verbiage is described as "word salad" - as if someone tossed a bunch of words and phrases up in the air and caught them in a bowl! |
