unhinged my rent has gone up 60% in five years and the breakneck expansion of amazon here in seattle with no concern for what the housing market in this city can bear. flooding the city with high paid engineers is also leading to bidding wars on the short supply of housing which also allows landlords to raise rents to levels that low wage workers ($15/hr is not a living wage in this city) can't afford without being burdened by housing costs and/or becoming food insecure.

smallhours My city (Philadelphia) is majorly campaigning for their second headquarters. People are divided on whether that would be a good or bad thing. I'm a little scared to click on those links.

We're way behind the west coast as far as tech goes though, so not a strong likelihood they'll choose us.

unhinged it will not be good for your city. i promise; i have only lived in seattle for six and a half years but the effects that amazon has had on this city are unmistakable. the homeless population has SKYROCKETED because the high paid amazon engineers are starting bidding wars on the limited supply of housing that is only becoming more limited as jeff bezos expands his company beyond the capacity of the city and just doesn't give a fuck. one crazy example; someone paid almost $500k for a condemned house. meaning basically that they paid half a million fucking dollars for the property. houses in the neighborhood i live in go for between $900k and $1mil. my rent has gone up 60% since 2012.

you really should watch those videos blather friend. i've also read an article online recently that said it's more than likely the second headquarters will be in DC because of bezos' ties to the pentagon and the CIA and his ownership of the washington post. that seems like a logical choice to me.

unhinged as if anyone needs any more reasons to STOP shopping on amazon, here's another one: jeff bezos is the richest man on the planet and his company paid NO fucking taxes. in fact, because of the rigged tax system, amazon claims the government OWES THEM $137mil.

wake up people...cheap counterfeit goods on amazon are undermining our entire social safety net one unpaid tax dollar at a time
