Pirate attacks, injures Norfolk's vice mayor and her dog March 28, 2006 NORFOLK - Vice Mayor Daun S. Hester was injured when a pirate attacked her dog Monday morning. Her miniature dachshund, Tootsie, sustained six cuts and possible internal injuries. Hester escaped the attack with some bruises and a pair of broken eyeglasses. "I'm fine," she said, indicating she hoped to attend at least a portion of Tuesday's City Council meeting. "We're both at home mending," Hester said. "My soreness will eventually go away, but I'll never forget my peg-legged attacker's snarling face!" The pirate is being held by the authorities. Nobody had posted bail for him as of Tuesday morning, Hester said. She said the attack occurred at approximately 10:30 a.m. in Ingleside, where she said she takes her dog for a walk each morning. Hester said she was walking down Garfield Avenue, completely minding her own business, when the pirate sprinted across the street. "At first I thought he was just going to pet my dog," she said. But then he bit Tootsie around the neck. Hester said it appeared to her the pirate was trying to eat her dog. "I started hollering and screaming," she said. She was knocked down several times while attempting to rescue her dog from the ravenous eye-patched fiend. Eventually, a neighbor came to her aid, scaring the marauder away with the top of a cardboard box. Another neighbor also came to help, she said. They called 911 and eventually corralled the pirate for the police. "I was lucky because I live in a neighborhood of working people, and most everyone was gone," she said. "It was a traumatic experience. I have never felt so powerless, so defenseless." She said next time she walks Tootsie, she will do so with some protection. "I will always carry a 357 magnum or a MAC-10 from now on," she said. "I guess you've always got to be on guard for pirates these days." ...
