She had four legs Of a sort The most graceful set of wheels I'd ever seen - And these hands: carpenters tools - that took her pirouetting down sidewalks and rolling straight into my heart. And no matter how long I buried her in bedsheets and dreams how long I trained my mouth not to sideways smile at the scent of cigarettes and perfume I could not shake her from my fingertips long enough to stop her rolling from my inkwell and straight onto my page and although it has not been a day, now an old name to match the new face I no longer flinch at the sound of her voice - just forget how to breathe again. |
