johnny had heard his uncle's rote speeches many times, and even though he hated his uncle, he hated Barnett even more. he had made sense of what his uncle had been saying, and now he saw its use. even if all he had to respond to Barnett with was shutup you dick, he would've said it - but he knew this was his chance to annoy him more. "you're of an outdated generation and mindset, we can't survive that kind of mindset. you don't appreciate the value of the middle class or how interdependant the world is, how much the poor resent the rich, how many are poor" Everytime Barnett, looking incredulous, went to start, Johnny would move forward and speak hard like a valve spitting steam - "who's going to buy the goods if the workers aren't paid enough? there's always a battle between management and workers - and once workers realized their collective necessity - its inevitable that they assert it. no, you let me finish. blind unswerving loyalty to shit pay sounds more like communism to me. capitalism allows workers to voice and assess their collective value in the marketplace and of course they'll do just that. they should be allowed like any other distributor to assert their value within the market and be limited or supported by only the equality afforded to all of us, the right to peaceably assemble, and to not be institutionally enslaved without due process that our country provides to everybody. then again you'd probably have a poor constitution and a rich constitution." johnny didn't know if he really believed what he was saying, but it was flowing right out and he was getting a kick out of it. barnett just looked at him and laughed. his response whenever he was challenged. "kid...look at your clothes kid - your dad couldn't provide for you and these were his excuses. now get the fuck out of my house." of course barnett didn't know about his dad's success or breakdown, but would probably just say that not being able to handle success is no better than never having it in the firstplace. either way the argument had just moved further into johnny's realm. "make me you old fuck" "sam, have this kid gone by dinner" barnett said and strutted out.
