protools is good
qbase also
i am learning reason presently
cool edit pro is a weaker piece of software, but does good work, too.
those are the major ones i know of...

protools is the best, better if run on a mac. protools tends to crash a pc a little too often for comfort. plenty of cool plug-ins and shit to pirate off the internet if you know where to get them for mixing and post-production and whatnot. i myself have never used it, but was recorded on it and spent many a long night watching friends who were rather proficient using it. having some experience with midi sequencing/recording programs, yeah, protools is the best thing to use. it's the industry standard.
