As a rule, people are afraid of change; especially big changes. Here we are on the edge of alliance, so close to doing right by ourselves by doing right as a race. But big changes are scary, so here we are too, like a 19 year old trying to avoid getting their own place, receding deeper into their rooms to avoid being pulled out and flung to the unknown of their destinies. For our race that receding means returning to the comfortable animal nature we came from. We're the masters there. We are the captain of that football team. We like to return to those old times when things were simple: Sex, food, fighting for dominance..physically, intellectually, emotionally. Here we are again like a cat clawing at the carrier door trying to avoid growing into our new human bodies and brains. Somehow we hope that we can do the monkey thing for another million years. Who knows? We might. Sure easier for us to trust the outcome of a billion years of animal history than the risky proposition of being pioneers in the new world of trying to be human.
