daf I've expounded on this for a bit. I thought I'd provide a VERY simple exercise that ANYONE can do..to prove to themselves that the world is NOT as dangerous as we are led to believe that it is.

All of our aversion to risky behaviors and subsequent regulation of those behaviors is based on the notion that there is some RAMPANT dying spree going on...and this simply isn't supported by the data.

Step 1: Go to www.cdc.gov/nchs/ That is the Center for Disease Control's National Center on Health Statistics. It's is considered the authority on Death Statistics here in the U.S.A.

Step 2: Click the Deaths link. You'll note that the latest number is: 2,448,017 deaths.

Step 3: Go to www.census.gov. This is the U.S. Census Bureau. They are considered the authority on how many people live in the United States.

Step 4: Note the number on the upper right hand side of the page. It should read about 304,224,000 people.

Step 5: Perform basic math on these two numbers to determine what percentage of U.S. citizens are dying from ALL causes (not just crime related causes..not just violent...scary deaths...but all causes..cancer...heart disease etc.)

If you don't know how to calculate a percentage: divide the number of deaths (2,448,017) by the number of people (304,224,000) and multiply the result by 100. (Note that this will be only SLIGHTLY inaccurate since the population clock is based on averages and the death statistics take a few years to be compiled. The last figures available are from 2005.)

Step 6: Look at the result and figure out why it is we keep allowing legislators to pass laws restricting our activities..when there is no epidiemic of dying. There is only a very normal...very natural rate of death. In fact, it's an abnormally LOW rate of death in nature.

If your calculator works like mine..you should be looking at a number that is smaller than 1%. That's right..less than 1% of our population dies every year from all causes.

I just thought it would be helpful for you to know...really KNOW that the world isn't a dangerous place. It's the spread of fear and paranoia..that's making it worse every day..and that makes it seem so dangerous.

We should stop being paranoid and start enjoying the freedom of risk and the risk of freedom a little more.

dafremen Did you go to the government sites and do the math? It's very simple...takes about 2 minutes and should provide the results I mention.

That's right..gun control nuts..sorry.

That's right..drunk driving regulation advocates..sorry.

American Heart Association aficionados..sorry.

dafremen So..what you're saying is that the percentage could be an even SMALLER number?!

(And yes..it was taken into consideration.)

Under-reporting and non-reporting compose the vast majority of inaccuracies in the census. More people means a smaller percentage of the population was affected by death.

As for the death toll. Remember, the trend in security and law enforcement legislation demonstrates that if the government were to fudge in any direction..it would be in the direction of MORE deaths..not less.

Under-reporting...even if it DOUBLED the number of deaths would still only bring us to around 1.5% of the population...and if your hyposthesis on the census is right..that would be brought right back down by under-reporting of population figures.

There's really no point there...sorry.

I do appreciate the comment tho.

No I do not trust the government..we can agree on that. which is why i dont trust all of this emotionalism that's attached to legislation and the arguments in support of them. smacks of bullshit to me. and the numbers seem to indicate that it is INDEED..just that.

daf (there's always the coffee pot to piss in.)

a lot of the things ive been working on lately have to do with using the governments own tools against its message.

another example is how ive adopted the banner of "Patriotism" because of the amount of time and money that's gone into training people to think in those terms.

Well since the entire notion of patriotism is flawed...particularly when we take into account the (as you said) totalitarian leaning of our government..it's become an effective tool for pointing out the hypocrisy of government policy. (in effect, im trying, through some of these writings to demonstrate how "unpatriotic" the government, politicians and police are these days..using their own buzzwords and catch phrases like FOUNDING FATHERS LAND OF THE FREE HOME OF THE BRAVE and LIBERTY against them.)

It's an idea that seemed worth pursuing when it first occurred to me. its been a slow process of feeling out whats "radical" and whats acceptable to the flag waving portion of the "mainstream."

Eventually we'll get out of this mess. Lord only nows how bad it'll get first...but we'll get out of this.

i'm very hopeful for the future..it's a beautiful life.
