| blueberries for you |
i stepped to the curb and watched him cross the four lanes. obviously he had done it many times before. he weaved in and out of traffic, a smooth needle through the yielding fabric of the day's intricate tapestry. when he returned, he was empty-handed. i didn't expect him to bring us anything, but dennis teased him anyway. he laughed. to have but one leg and still laugh. that alone is cause for celebration. i told him he inspired me. he looked down and grew quiet. so i asked him for advice to give my dad who had a stroke recently and lost the use of his right foot and is reluctant to walk outside. "tell him to use it or he'll lose it," the old man said resolutely. "just like his pecker." we all laughed. "are there a lot of pretty girls in your building?" fyn asked. he thought a while. "no, not really," he finally said. "some of them think i'm cool, but they're 8o." |
