Strideo I liked the movie very much even though I wasn't sure I would when I kept seeing Tom Cruise wearing samurai armor and charging a line of infantry men in the previews. It was very well done.

Saigo Takamori is the historical figure the movie is loosely based on. If the movie perks your interest check out the book about him by Mark Ravina also called The Last Samurai, allthough unrelated to the movie.

oE great movie

bushido - a compelling path, discipline,
perfection in whatever you devote yourself to..just the kind of consecration and tutledge some of our undisciplined, overindulged, disrespectful young men could use - why wait until you are in your late 20's or 30's to mature?

if anyone can find the full text of the book on line please let me know

Strideo The movie is not based on the book by Mark Ravina. It is however loosely based on the story of Saigo Takamori.
Saigo is often called the last true samurai by the Japanese people so the fact that the movie has the same title as Mr. Ravina's book doesn't mean anything. I guess what I mean by unrelated is that the movie producers didn't go to Mark Ravina and say "Hey we are doing a movie based on your book". The book is a biography while the movie is fiction. The movie is simply based on the same historical figure.

Strideo Captain Nathan Algren for example is a fictional character and would not be in the book.

Just an example of how they are unrelated. Its a great movie though and many of its underlying themes are very true.

Strideo I'm sorry for being so wordy. It would have have been more appropriate for me to say the book is unaffiliated with the movie since obviuosly the subject material is related.

phil So what you are saying, is the book is about the "last samurai".
And the movie is about the "last samurai".

...
phil only the book is non-fiction and the movie is fictional. 031211
...
phil Based maybe on other fictional samurai material, here and there historical data for an accurate portrayal of the japanese setting. 031211

p2 i really liked it
my fiancee liked it less
due to reasons i cannot say
without spoiling things

it had a better "love" scene than most
and as a former kali student
i really enjoyed the swordplay
truly top-notch choreography

tenshi no doku this movie and Collateral may be Tom Cruise's best films.

I generally avoid his movies because he tends to be so "one-note" in his performances.

this movie, though, i found his performance and many of the others to be both quite effective and very moving.
