Imagining what a light would look like if there was nothing for it to shine on, illustrates the carefully balanced nature of power in the universe. Without even retinas to shine on, or a brain to process it..it looks like absolutely nothing. Light is reveal through matter. The need is even more profound in the other direction. Matter is composed of energy. Energy that's become trapped by its fellow travellers. Bits of the photon herd that stopped to watch the rest go by. That's sort of the story of the human race, of terrestrial evolution(even that of the extraterrestrial sort, if that's of interest.) We're just some bits of energy stopped to watch the rest do their thing. Eventually, we'll join up with the photon herd again..and wait for the next migration.

A man had great tasks to accomplish that required great coordination, and so he gave each of his fingers a mind of its own. Imagine his surprise when he rose one morning to find that his left hand would not respond. Instead he observed the absurd scene of his fingers fighting for dominance over each other..reducing his hand to a useless writhing mass on the end of his arm. He then had little more than a club hand with which he could accomplish none of his goals. And so he took away the minds of the fingers on the left hand and also their ability to choose. Then he made them slaves of the thumb. Just as useless, but not nearly as disturbing to look at. After the fingers had gotten used to their oppression under the thumb, the man used his right hand to reteach each finger of the left hand how to function properly, and then..each was given its mind back and released from under the thumb. It was in this manner that one day the man had full use of both of his hands, and was able to accomplish much greater things than the world was ever able to contain.
