Doar And why should I follow the rules,
when all I have is followed the fucking rules,
seeing the rules measured and
parceled out to be digested and followed,
walking into a wall followed,
watching the nurse followed.

.

Why?

.

Not against you R_O.

Just frustration.

REAListic optimIST Rules are made to be broken. The rule that rules are made to be broken is made to be broken. Rules provide the structure, and the structure gives us something to relate to. When the structure is gone, sometimes it's hard to know how to relate.

In haiku and limerick games, rules are
what lets me know how to play, and the rules are what gives the poem its beauty.

That said, I'm sorry that I was so attached to the rules. Maybe I should just not play rules-y games in a blather format, and stick to the more freeform pages.

I know that "rules" around blather is one of the stickiest topics there is. People have all kinds of rules about what blather is supposed to be, and by discussing limerick rules on blather, I've unwittingly kicked that slumbering beast.

Ah well, thanks for having words about this topic. I feel better already for having words back.

DannyH To be fair to both of you the guidelines regarding limericks are more a consensual convention which gives definition to a genre. If you ignore the convention you can't really be said to be engaging in the writing of a limerick. Breaking or stretching the conventions of limerick writing in a knowledgeable way can be a creative contribution to the genre. You have to understand the rules to do this and engage with them, however, otherwise you're playing a different game. For example the following is still an example of a limerick:

There was a young man from Japan
Who never could make his rhymes scan.
When asked why this was,
he said "it's because
I always try to get as many words into the last line as I possibly can."

With its straightjacket rule
Was a little too tame I suppose

Death of a Rose thanks R_O, Danny, and Jeffrey (although i do think you have a moniker lurking in your closet, watch the door very...very...closely...and always keep the light on during the night).

.

I will try to follow the limerick rules again. now that this little outburst has made it's way towards the tertiary rivulet.
