he went to mexico and brought back gifts. 'i have something for you.' she couldn't even imagine what it was. he kept forgetting, which was not a surprise. the day he remembered, he snuck in her studio and laid them out on her violin case while she was in the front of the store gathering up another student. a pair of dangly earrings made out of bone and a string of beads that closely resembled her malas. they were the nicest gifts she'd gotten from a friend in a long time. just the thought that he was thinking of her on his trip made her happy. it took her a while to wear the earrings. they didn't seem to match anything. they looked like summer. but then it got unseasonably warm and they matched her outfit and she garnered some compliments so she couldn't stop wearing them. the first time she wore them to work he immediately smiled. 'nice earrings. they look good on you. i've got good taste.' she had some errands to run. she put the earrings on and hopped out the door. wearing them made her feel close to him. the bus flew by as she walked up to the stop so she decided to just walk where she was going. it was a really windy day, like walking through mud. at one of the places she stopped, the receptionist looked up 'one of your earrings is missing dear.' 'really?! oh damn. i've hardly worn them and a friend brought them back from mexico for me. damn damn.' her heart sank. it felt like she had lost a piece of him. a week later, she had more errands to run and once again missed the bus and decided to walk. as a creature of habit, she walked the same route listening to her headphones. she kept her eye on the uneven sidewalk and suddenly there it was still in the middle of the sidewalk from the week before. 'oh my GOD' she squealed out loud and bent over and picked up the pieces of bone. no matter how they were separated, they came back together like there was never any distance or time between them.

how beautifully put I am constantly losing things and then finding them when I was 10, I climbed to the top of a lighthouse as I stood outside and looked down my glasses fell off my face all the way down.down.down from the top of the lighthouse to the bottom I thought they were lost forever as I came down and rounded the corner, there they were, waiting for me on the sidewalk I picked them up from the ground and placed them on my face and went along my way. one time I lost my earring on my way to work (it was windy) on a superpopulated street by the subway station at the end of the day when I was on my way home walking the same street I looked down and there it was during my recent move I lost my glasses I looked everywhere and three weeks later, I found them on the curb by the house amazing how certain things stay there waiting for you to reclaim them

(i was so afraid i had lost it forever and then so happy when i found it. i still haven't told him about it because i felt guilty for losing it; even though it was because the part of the earring that connected the dangly to the hook was cheap and broke)
