the word "odissey" was invented after that Homer epic called the same. the principal character ulysses was originally called odysseus (ulysses is the roman name) and according to the story told, he faces several tests and monsters to return as a hero to his home, ithaca.
so, the word "odissey" ("of odisseus", in greek) took that meaning-- a road full of obstacles.
