Scientists Teleport Not Kirk, but an Atom New York Times - 8 hours, 35 minutes ago Two teams of scientists report that for the first time they have teleported individual atoms, taking characteristics of one atom and imprinting them on a second. SCIENTISTS `TELEPORT' A SINGLE ATOM San Jose Mercury News - 2 hours, 57 minutes ago Two teams of scientists reported Wednesday that they had for the first time teleported individual atoms, taking the characteristics of one atom and imprinting them on a second. Teleportation breakthrough made BBC News - 17 hours, 23 minutes ago Scientists teleport the properties of one atom to another without using any physical link - a development that may lead to ultra-fast computing. Scientists teleport information between atoms CBC News - 12 hours, 40 minutes ago LONDON - Two groups of physicists have teleported physical properties between atoms without using a physical link, a discovery they say could help develop ultrafast quantum computing technology. Physicists 'Teleport' Atoms Troy Record - HiTech - 5 hours, 52 minutes ago U.S. and Austrian scientists separately have demonstrated the teleportation of information using atoms for the first time.

Entanglement breaks new record 30 June 2004 Physicists have succeeded in entangling five photons for the first time. Although four photons have been entangled before, five is the minimum number needed for universal error correction in quantum computation. Moreover, the same team has demonstrated a process called "open-destination teleportation" for the first time http://physicsweb.org/article/news/8/6/18

Teleportation Takes Quantum Leap Stefan Lovgren for National Geographic News April 18, 2004 It sounds like something out of Star_Trek. Austrian researchers have teleported photons (particles of light) across the Danube River in Vienna using technology that calls to mind Scotty beaming up Captain Kirk in the science fiction series. "We were able to perform a quantum teleportation experiment for the first time ever outside a university laboratory," said Rupert Ursin, a researcher at the Institute for Experimental Physics at the University of Vienna in Austria. The researchers read the "blueprints" of the photons they wanted to teleport. They then broke up the photons into smaller particles called quantum bits and sent these bits, along with the blueprints, through a fiber-optic cable in a sewage pipe under the river. At the other end, replicas of the original photons were created. The original photons ceased to exist once the replicas were created. For a human to be teleported, a machine would have to pinpoint and analyze the trillions and trillions of atoms that make up the human body. Only recently have scientists taken preliminary steps toward teleporting even a single, whole atom.
