Many people say that they are sorry and they really don't mean it. Some other people don't say they are sorry and really are sorry. A comfortable medium would be nice, such as saying you are sorry and really meaning it. Unfortunately this is not something is fully understood therefore not something that can ever be put into the correct effect one hundred percent of the time, or even ten percent of the time.
There are other circumstances where the word is used. It can be used when trying to console someone for something that happened to them or for something that they lost. If you don't really mean that you are sorry, why then do people say that they are sorry? It is because they feel bad and have nothing else to say or cannot think of some other more prudent reply. And this is quite alright because most of the time the person would feel slightly better when they hear utterance of the word sorry. It makes them feel as though someone cares about them enough to say anything at all.
This might be a slight misperception though because sometimes someone might say sorry to cut the awkward silence that they are hearing at that moment and really care nothing at all for the recipient of the word. If one were to say that they were sorry that they had lied, but they really weren't sorry, they would be lying once again and the sorry that they muttered for the first lie would become void because they just lied again and did not apologize for the second lie and if they did, they would be lying again and this could go on into forever and no one would want that.
Sorry can also be used sarcastically and have the opposite affect that a normal sorry would have. If someone keeps bugging you about one of your bad traits and it makes you angry you might yell "sorry!" causing the other person to be sorry that they had bothered you but they probably wouldn't apologize for their bugging because they really would like you to quit your habit and won't apologize for their effort.
Sorry is such a sorry word but everyone uses it and it cannot be avoided because it can be used in just about every way imaginable and is used without thought.
