blather
sore_throat
~erin. it feels like the soft, mucus-lined flesh in my throat
is slowly peeling and burning away
to reveal the uncomfortably tender redness
that is soaking in sickness--
that is scabbing
and curdling
and slowly forcing up the product
of coughingcoughingcoughing
so that an oozing spit
can be thrust from the mouth,
landing on the cold pavement with a sickening
-splat-
. . . this is the feeling
of waking up
to a burningpeelingoozing
in your throat;
this is the hot aching that makes your tongue recoil
at the feeling that food scratches its way down,
slowly relieving the ache
by taking scab after scab along with it--
it will be dissolved with the meal,
savored like a delicacy--
all for the sake of manifested sickness:
this is not the thing that can be caught--
this is the redness of healing.
