blueberries he held her and the sun was bright on the sea, thousands of scintillating diamonds exploding with each wave against the rocks of the jetty. she no longer spoke and he felt her heart slowing down against his chest. her breathing was calm and her eyes were closed. the light brought out red streaks in her hair and it was beautiful and warm against his cheek.

frAnk heard the echoes of her screams in his recent memory, panicked words from a trapped bird beating its wings against the bars of its sudden imprisonment. it startled him then, and he winced now as they played over and over in his head.

he felt so bad for her, all alone in her desolate misery, a stranger in a foreign land. yet, she trusted him. in his arms, she could find refuge.

mrs. nereid, who had followed them to the top of the beach path, slowly and respectfully made her way down to the sand where they now stood. frAnk noticed her presence and carefully turned his gaze towards her. she smiled and ran her hand aginst amarilla's hair with gentle concern.
"her hair is so beautiful," mrs. nereid said, "look how the sun shines on it so."
"i know," frAnk whispered, nodding his head. he could feel amarilla's embrace tighten.

and that was all she said, as if words were no longer necessary. her motherly presence alone spoke volumes to amarilla. she eventually released her hold on frAnk, and the three of them sat on the warm sand, digging their toes into the yielding softness.

nothing but silence and crashing waves. sunlight on the face like a blanket of love.

...
unhinged 'i interrupted your dinner' amarilla stared out at the ocean.

'it is alright dear. frAnk why don't you go check and make sure that juan is not pummeling the life out of cowie. he has been rather cruel towards her when she embarasses girls he takes a liking to' frAnk got up and started his way up the path and mrs. nereid moved closer to amarilla in the sand. 'dear whatever this is' she grabbed amarilla's left arm even as she squirmed and ran her thumb across the scabs 'you must get rid of it. you know that it is poisoning you. i can see it in your eyes. where did the poison come from?'

'maybe i should leave you and your family in peace.'

'no. it is too late for that now. all the children like you and they will be hurt to see you go. you act as if you are the first child that has come to us for help. your running must end.'

'MAMA....MAMA....juan made my nose bleed...' they could hear cowie's shrill voice calling after them down the path.
