we stood around the fire and the flames licked away at the darkness bringing light to your face as i saw it reflected in a green rolling rock bottle. we could stand there talking like the others, but we don't. alone together we long to be by ourselves. so we make our way slowly along the crushed red rock to where the light no longer reaches. to where sparrows sleep with tiny heads tucked under fragile wings. i smell woodsmoke in your hair. i taste yeast on your lips. i breathe in the air surrounding us and the happiness is a fog that blinds me to anything else i'll ever see. |

they bleed dripping crimson water from their primeval veins these rocks have watched for so long the coming and going of millions of years eons stretching into almost-eternity an endless parade of wet, breathing creatures and how is it that something as small as a button and a human hand to push it can make these ancients weep? |
