When I spent a lot of time reading scientific texts for information, it altered my way of reading. I'd try to read a fiction novel and find myself unconsciously skimming it for facts instead of enjoying the extraneous details. Now I've found that I've switched to another mode. I was reading a magazine and I came to a phrase and I imagined a student asking me what it meant and contemplated how I would explain it. I caught myself- this is vice magazine! why would i be reading this to a kid?! Right now I'm frightened by how narrative and didactic my writing style is in this blather. Oh the fun of being hyper self-conscious! |
