on the far northern isle of spitsbergen is a town called 'pyramiden' what a strange name for a norse settlement! the "alphabetology" of that seems to be very different than anything else in norwegian/swedish/danish/finnish/icelandic... there isn't any pyramid there that i know of...the town is mainly a mining settlement... one of the other towns on spitsbergen is longyearbyen (shouldn't take a linguist to figure out the relevance of that name); and it isn't the old world tradition to name towns randomly. the net returns many sites containing references and/or pictures of pyramiden but none address the name, at least, none that i saw perhaps it is the worlds northernmost mine? but there is one further north on spitsbergen... perhaps it is the worlds primary supplier of some obscure mineral? no data on that either...although a list of minerals mined there did turn up, quantities were not listed maybe they are planning on building a casino/hotel shaped like a pyramid to draw tourists? there is, after all, a month and a half of summer. one wonders...
