You need my driver's license? Registration? What entitles you to that information? Mind telling me just who the hell you are? Just doing your job? But I don't do business with you company There's no solicitation here So why're you hassling me? Oh..you're the Law? Well the law's for those who benefit I'm tired and broke and my back's an ache My benefits are caught up in red tape I've got a feeling I'll be getting none at all And you're bringing up the Law?! No you may not have my anything And don't think that you're scaring me (brother, I don't scare that easily) Cuz I've taken all I'm gonna take this year All I can take..you hear? I've taken everything I think I ever could More than I should Or ever will again I've taken all I can So put away that gun Plan on killing me for this one? Cuz I'm not running anymore They say I'm free Well, I'm about to test that theory, see? So put that gun and ticket book away Do as I say And I'll listen to your advice Still, I suggest you compromise Because I will not bow to you And I'm not paying you a thing I've already paid your house Your wedding ring..your wife's That car...your gun Taxes and fines The days of my life Well I've had about as much As I can take If you've got something else to say Then say it Otherwise I WILL be on my way I've got someplace to be And they say I'm free Haven't you heard? And you work for ME To protect and serve Now go protect us from someone Who's in the mood To have their day disrupted by "The keeper of the minor rules" I'm not a fool I'm a lot like you Except I don't subscribe To the twisted notion That my job entitles me To taking liberties with strangers Talking down every day To the folks you serve As though they were As though they were.. Somewhere in the past Six hundred thirty five kilometers away From the unfolding of this scene Unfolds another one From the officer's memories Of a hurt he once felt Of a fear he feels That his gunbelt protects him from Control is everything he needs Covers him insecurity Control is everything Sure seems like everything Huh Johnny? Are the bad guys too quick and smart? Are you scoping out minor violations Hassling regular citizens Just to keep you in a job? Creating your own workloads? And you expect us To let you keep that up? Stopping folks To rob their earnings Practically at gunpoint Takes a lot of nerve But "it's your job" (and it gets you off) If we solved all the minor crimes The laws would just create some more So who the hell are you working for, indeed? Because these days I'm pretty sure it ain't for me It's to fill the local coffers up some more To support your adrenaline spree It's all about the loot you're here to score But you'll be getting none from me And probably not from anyone else We got together and decided for ourselves That we're still free And we're not taking anymore You see? Because we're free We all got together to see and it was true Now take a look behind you..
