epitome of incomprehensibility

James Salzman's book Drinking Water: A History notes that bottling water started centuries ago - people were willing to buy holy water from supposedly miraculous springs, or mineral waters that had certain health benefits. That was mostly a luxury, though, and in the first half of the 20th century tap water was the new thing. Bottled water wasn't cool anymore... until advances in plastic meant that water bottles could be light and thin, and companies discovered that selling little water bottles gave them a huge profit margin. And a lot of it's just regular water. Take Aquafina (owned by Pepsi) and Dasani (Coca-Cola) - it's just de-mineralized tap water, and it doesn't even need to meet the same inspection standards that many cities' water systems do. So I'd much rather carry around a reusable bottle or mug, and take it home to wash, than buying 350ml of water for $2. (Although the Catholic Reptilian Atheist Zionist Illuminati informs me that fluoride in tap water causes premature ejaculation in men and inappropriate references to Dr. Strangelove in women. Oh well. At least it's not the other way around.)
