Ok, so I got cable internet set up in my apt. and within a week my computer has totally went to crap. Every time I get online the computer ends up freezing up and I have to shut it down or Ill get this notice saying there was an error and it shuts down itself. What do I need to do to fix this!?!?!

You need a good anti-virus software with real-time protection. You need to get Microsoft Anti-Spy and set it up properly. You might also want to turn-on and setup your Firewall.

try "Spy Sweeper" by Webroot. unfortunately its only a 15 day trial but it did find some really malicious spyware on my computer.
also there is ad-adware se personal (it doesn't do quite a thorough job IMHO).
my computer friend also reccommended "hijackthis".

hey freak, you might need to clean up your registry. however doing this is tricky and if you don't do it right you might really ...err..ruin your system. i recomend that you try the suggestions above, that is download a good anti-virus software and run a scan. you don't have to pay for software if you're familiar with bittorent.

i used to wonder why my computer froze every time i went online, and it turned out to be internet_explorer, so i'd recommend not using it if you are, possibly using mozilla_firefox instead

i must agree with you neesh, actually if you'd like to take it a step further i recomend that you not only stop using crappy IE but also delete from your system, this can be done with a little piece of software called "XPLite".

Since you have a legal and licensed copy of Windows, I would suggest you dl Microsoft's Anti-Spyware. It is free, and its the best I have seen around yet. Just go to their homepage and type anti-spyware in the search bar. I am sure you can figure out the rest.

The problem was the explorer. I got the mozilla firefox and havent had a problem since!
I was at a loss because I already had spyware and the firewall was set up but my computer was still just being terrible.
Fixed now! YAY!!

The issue of which browser to use is only the tip of the iceberg. The problem is not IE itself. It has been hijacked by spyware. Therefore, it is running slow. Of course, if you dl a new browser with all of its default settings intact then it is going to run just fine. I, myself, use Mozilla. In my opinion, it operates better than IE. However, there have been quite a few security flaws exposed lately. But all of this is beside the point. If the problem isn't taken care of, at its most basic root level, then it will come back and attack ANY browser that one would decide to use.
I wouldn't suggest uninstalling IE either, even if you do not use it. IE is directly rooted into the OS. (Consider the fact that you have to buy a program to remove it.)
