he never travelled much, though he had wanted to. so he tried for the same effect in more modest ways. he'd often get his haircut at a different place each time. or he'd try the burger king downtown instead of uptown to see if they had different specials. and he'd drive alone a lot at night. it was really a different land with the lights off and everything so dark, and even people's most innocent movements now shadowy. he judged a town by how many late night places they had. even if it was a taco bell, just seeing that blue and red open sign was to him an indication that a place had class.
