they had rented paddle boats. they paddled around the lake chasing ducks or doing slow gradual donuts. sometimes he'd get the urge to fall into the water. he liked sudden extreme moments like that, where you just made the decision and followed through minus the posturing and second guessing. he imagined suicide would be like that, only without having to sit shivering in the car which has leather seats you aren't supposed to get wet. he didn't fall into the water this time though. she wished she had brought bread so she could trick the geese and ducks into harassing range. they were in that mood of careless joy when every comment seems a joke, when you suddenly start talking as if in some bizarre scenario and the other person knows exactly where you are. she'd say things upon seeing a goose cleaning itself like "you're still going to be a dirty old goose after you're done" and he'd just laugh. they ate twix. there was a heavily wooded mini-island in the middle of the lake. it said keep off. it seemed like the type one entered and walked through, coming out into a world now unfamiliar and filled with dinosaurs or something, like a time portal. or else a place where they would find giant spiders in the trees, or have to steal a rare egg. there were geese honking.

riding paddleboats and feeding the ducks. that is my youth. i don't feel any older than that moment. what my birth certificate says must be a lie. i am no older than you, i'm sure of it. when i write underneath you, i have stopped the clock, stopped time. possibly even reversed time. if i'm just a little girl, then i shouldn't care about sex because i wouldn't even know what it is. and at that point, i think we'd be just friends.
