this morning I had a fantastic experience I went into the place where I used to work to present my thesis. I was quite worried about it - a room full of very smart people with science backgrounds who work in IT, listing to my post-structualist critical analysis of cyberspace but it worked, it totally worked. maybe because they were so smart, maybe because I know them so well. I set it up carefully - explained that I wasn't just going to sit there and tell them things. there were no right answers or definitions, that was not the point. the point was generation of discourse and ideas. it was fantastic. they came up with all the ideas, where totally on board with all my questions. I didn't tell them anything, I just asked questions and presented images and quotes to respond to. by the end of the session, they had validated all of the main points in my thesis, but they had reached every single one themselves. I didn't have to convince or argue or explain. they got there by themselves. not every single one, of course, there were some dissenters. dissent can be very productive. and I had so much fun. I didn't expect to enjoy it that much.
