u24 How about we force everyone to have a .unsafe TLD, so it would be microsoft.com.unsafe, google.com.unsafe

It would reinforce the idea that !!!NOTHING IS SAFE ONLINE!!!

I mean, how loud do we have to shout it before people finally get it?!

Let's try it a few more times:

HEY USERS!
NOTHING IS SAFE!
PEOPLE ARE EVIl!
THE INTERNET IS A BAD PLACE!
NOTHING IS SAFE ONLINE!
NOTHING!!!!! NOT EVEN PAYPAL!!!!
NOTHING IS SAFE ONLINE!

LISTEN!

NOTHING IS SAFE ONLINE!

c'mon guys, chant with me, perhaps they'll realise if we all chant together

NOTHING IS SAFE ONLINE!
NOTHING IS SAFE ONLINE!
NOTHING IS SAFE ONLINE!

damn, it's not working.

I guess people will always be stupid, no matter how many clever people try to stop them.

Agreeing One The cavalier attitude of so many people is really quite alarming, I agree. 070411

mom what do you mean about paypal????!!?!!!! 070411
...
u24 just that people seem to trust it more than they trust their spouse. It's a website like any other, vulnerable to the same weaknesses and exploits as any other. The particularly worrying thing about paypal is that it isn't held by banking standards, so if they do lose all your money, I'm not sure what you can do about it.

I mean, I use it too, but I'd really rather not.

I wrote the original blathe in response to a slashdot article about a proposal that would involve banks getting ".safe" after their URL, so it would be "barclays.com.safe"

I mean, please, what the hell is that supposed to do? what does safe mean? who ensures that it's safe? if my site doesn't have .safe, does that mean it's unsafe? but everything is unsafe! and so on.

Agreeing One I, too, have been alarmed by my own cavalier attitudes, including here at blather.newdream.net.unsafe. From time to time, however, I have been delighted by cavalier attitudes both in myself and in others. Perhaps this accounts for my inability to abandon such attitudes entirely. Here's to intermittent bursts of cavalierness, though perhaps such bursts are better allocated to the offline realms. 070411
