my new years eve wasnt as enjoyable as i had hoped. i had two options: to go over krista's house or go to steve's house. krista had called me earlier that day and suggested i come over to ring in the new year with her. i was delighted she asked, because it gave me something to do, and took me off the hook of going to steve's house, which i was second guessing altogether. several events led to my going to steve's house instead of krista's mainly this idea that my father refused to let me, for whatever his reasons were. peter gave me a ride to steve's house, but he didn't stay. jessica had invited him to go to another party that night, and he decided to ring in the new year elsewhere; i partially wish i had gone with him. the ride there with peter was fun, even though it was probably only 30 minutes long. we talked about the unnecessary copious sex that occurs in movies and how it ruins them. he told me he saw "gangs of new york" and that daniel day-lewis gave a wonderful performance. i was happy to hear that because, like peter, i have a lot of respect for daniel day-lewis as an actor. he said the movie was pretty outstanding and that i should go. i told him about "mullholland drive" and how it took me more than one viewing to even begin to comprehend that movie. we listen to his MP3s of David Cross's standup routine, which i hadnt heard before, and laughed so hard in steve's driveway before we even went in. i'm a new big fan of David Cross. as we were laughing hysterically in the driveway, steve walks out and when peter rolls down the window, steve starts repeating David Cross verbatim. he says that they were just listening to him in the house. after i finished laughing and got out of the car, i got a look at steve in the dark. same height, not visibly fatter but i knew he was. as we entered the house, which appeared average sized from the entrance that i came in, i got to get a better look at this person who i hadn't seen since a football game back in the fall. he had told me he had grown out his hair and that he now had a bear. and yes, his hair was considerably longer : from behind he resembles a girl with very nice hair. it still swoops to one side like it always did. his beard is a nice beard, not terribly scruffy but just scruffy enough. i had to touch it, to see whether or not it was soft. and it was. and i smiled. and he smiled and explained how he just decided to let it grow. the only people at his house were matt, austin, steve and most recently peter and myself. we went in the basement, where there are three couches, well one couch and two love seats, a bar - which was cluttered with chips, dips and pop - and the computer desk. i laughed when i saw it, as i do anyones computer desk. i always think to myself "so that's where you're sitting when i'm talking to you online", when i see someones computer chair. anyway, i sat on the far loveseat, the one next to the television and took off my coat. i could finally get a good look at everyone because i wasnt outside anymore and the dim lights were helping me to adjust. steve was wearing a button down shirt, that i think i've seen before, jeans and shoes that he never took off all night. austin was wearing a black tshirt with "owls" on it, jeans and white socks, for a change. he's an avid fan of black socks. matt was wearing a very nice grey sweater and jeans. peter also wore a black shirt and jeans. i was the only one not wearing jeans. i decided to wear black pants. i like my cuffed black pants. the dog newton was annoying, because it was a boy dog, and i'm always afraid boy dogs are going to hump my leg. i have a girl dog, therefore this problem isn't presented to me on a daily basis. as i sat on the love seat, looking at everyone, austin threw his shoe at me. i was quiet, mainly because i was regretting coming and because i had a headache. something was playing on the CD player and , of course, i didn't know who it was, but everyone else did and proceeded to play air drums and mimic "bending guitar riffs" with their mouths. as i sat and smiled blindly at there play, another shoe was tossed in my direction. the culprit then got up and actually came over and gave me a personal hello, which was the extent of my conversation with him for the rest of the night. he took his coat and scarf off and i noticed his nails were painted silver, just like chris', just like tommy gnosis'. i told him that i had been watching a show on leonardo dicaprio and noticed that leo wore a headband sometimes. i made it my duty to procure a headband for him. he sat laid his coat across my lap and bopped back over to the couch. matt was on the other other loveseat, peter was also on the couch and steve was in the computer chair. after we listened to David Cross until about 10:30, steve said he was going to go get the pizzas. he asked me to come with him, and i was happy to get out of the room. i like austin when he's not with steve. and i like steve when he's not with austin. but its not as fun when they are together. i kept smiling to myself all night because i kept seeing things that made me remember. when we went outside and i saw his hunter green car, i almost laughed outloud. as i suspected there was a cd case in the passenger seat and jones bottles on the floor. and the stickers that come off of new cds with the title and artist on them, were stuck to the dashboard. a lot of them. and we suddenly got talkative. and i kept smiling to myself because he had this terribly adult rapist sexy thing going on in the darkness of the car. i think at the moment, he could have had anyone. and anyone would have had him. we laughed a lot in the car about "wanksta", which is a terrible song that doesn't deserve to be aired on the radio or television. and all night we kept saying "you say you a wanksta, but you dont got nothin'. go down to the dealership, but you dont cop nothin'". i felt bad for the lady working at the pizza place because she looked upset. probably because she had to work on new year's eve. i told him how that day, i had listened to all the old cds at least twice through and read all of the old poetry and looked at the band tour pictures. he said he had a book that was almost half full of poetry from last year. i would love to read some of that...i'm sure it would be terribly and almost humorously interesting. when we got back, peter said he was going to get pizza, eat and then leave. i was hoping he would eat really slowly. we all ate and listened to more David Cross. then peter left and i felt alone again. we listened to even more David Cross and then at 11:30, we turned on to MTV to watch Avril Lavigne perform, during which steve proclaimed the she was his wife, and austin looked jealous. they all really wanted to see good charlotte perform and kept laughing and saying that good charlotte sucked really bad. then at 11:58, steve poured us each of a glass of wine - the fake stuff that doesn't say anywhere on the bottle that it's fake. so we all drank at 12:00 and austin said "so who's going to kiss me?". matt said he would. we then watched the rest of the MTV New Year's Pajama Party until it went off and then watched the Osbournes marathon until 1:30. all this time i lay under my coat on the love seat. i never really talked because they usually talked about something that i didnt know about. but i suppose the words were nice, the way they sound. at 1:30, steve asked me should we leave, because my parents might wonder where i am. austin asked could he stay at steve's house and steve said sure, only that he had to be out by 11 because the family was going to some New Year's lunch or something. austin decided not to crash at steve's house, because he wanted to sleep in. so steve and i got in steve's car and i never said goodbye to austin or matt. on the way home, steve and i were acting tipsy even though we werent. we had to be careful to not drive too fast because the police were everywhere. he put his seat far back and drove so he could hardly see, which was hardly careful. he said he was going to babylon after he dropped me off and asked me when i would take him to angel falls to pick up guys. i told him that the winter time isn't a great time to go, because there arent as many people out then. but maybe when spring roles around....because he will be here. he said he didnt feel like driving home, so i told him he could come up and sleep on my floor. he said in the morning he would open my door and walk out naked, and freak out my mom. and it would freak her out, and myself included. i got in and my parents werent even home yet. it was 2:15. i was slightly disappointed that i hadn't spent the new year in a more enjoyable way. and i was sad that i didnt say good night to austin. or matt. but i did say happy new year to you as i lay under my coat. i hope you had a nice time at your cousin's house. i even had your cousin's phone number, but your mom warned me, just as you had, that they have an odd answering machine message and that they don't answer their phone. so i hoped you received my happy new year message even though i didnt call. happy late new year kate.
