thomas I am going to be a father. It seems both unreal and wonderful at the same time. It hasn't sunk all the way in that we are making a new life, but I am so incredibly happy.

I leave Monday for a month in Africa. I hate to leave, but we need the money from the contract pretty badly.

What a confusing, scary, wonderful time.

that reminds me of...

London 1898

::robert beaumont:: '...i'm robert beaumont. firm handshake. i like that...tells me alot about you. ...we're in a race Col., and the prize is nothing less than the continent of Africa. we are building the most expensive and daring railroad in history for the glorious purpose of saving AFrica from the Africans, and of course to end slavery. our competitors are the germans and the french. we are ahead and we will stay ahead provided you do what i have hired you to do - build a bridge across the river Tsavo and be finished in 5 months. can you do that?

::col. john patterson:: '...i love africa. i have always wanted to go there. ...and if i may speak personally...my wife is having our firstborn in 6 months, and i promised her i'd be there for the birth. ...and i always keep my word.'

::robert beaumont:: '...very moving col. patterson. i'm i'm i'm touched. you've confided in me, but i really don't give a shit about your upcoming litter. i've made you with this assignment. don't make me break you.'

The excerpts above were taken from the film 'The Ghost and The Darkness'. This is an amazing story if you have not already heard it. I recommend the book as opposed to the film, or better yet, read 'The man-eaters of Tsavo'. Even though the events in the film were somewhat embellished, the film follows the events fairly accurately. 'The Ghost and the Darkness' is the true story of the construction of a railroad bridge across the Tsavo River in what is today Kenya, Africa. The events in the movie actually took place in 1898. It seems that a pair of lions were killing the workers in large numbers. The project leader, Colonel J.H. Patterson, was doing everything he could to stop these animals, without success. Even the Masai lion hunters gave up! The two lions, both males, were given the names 'The Ghost' and 'The Darkness' by the local natives. After some help from a professional big game hunter, the two lions were eventually shot, after killing some 140 people. These lions were mounted, and are on display at Chicago's Field Museum of Natural History.'

no reason sometimes it's tempting just to pick up and leave, and start one somewhere else. not to escape, for once, but just to try something new.
